The film attempts to paint a picture of today’s more sexually assertive yuppies.Or as the filmmakers deign to admit, Liberated is more like the local answer to the HBO TV series Sex and the City.Former beauty queen Francine Prieto plays a BMW sales agent. She’s beautiful and she’s very much in love with her boyfriend played by Christian Vasquez. They both look hot together but Francine is intractable when it comes to maintaining her virginity. The frustrated Vasquez, an artist who seems to have a lot of issues to confront, thus turns to his former lover played by Diana Zubiri. The latter happens to be Francine’s closest friend and she’s still much in love with Christian. So goes the predictable contretemps of Liberated, which are enlivened by the rest of Francine’s friends played by Tuesday Vargas and Rodel Velayo.Vargas plays a single mother who falls for a bar tender while Velayo is the gay friend who usually goes hunting for men in movie theaters.Said hunts usually leave Velayo being punched on the nose or without a cell phone.Hunky Winston Elizalde steals the thunder as a quirky artist who falls for Diana Zubiri. This gang is liberated alright. They’re addicted to sex and one-night stands—even the film’s virginal heroine isn’t above enjoying her lover’s body. It’s just for as long as they don’t go all the way.And of course, they have a moral lesson to learn and suddenly, they’re the most wholesome bunch you could ever meet.
